The Award Committee appreciated PGE's involvement in assistance for Poland's best sports people like the volleyball team of PGE Skra Bełchatów and the national speedway racing team, the winners of Speedway Team World Cup. On 7 January 2012 during the Sports Champions Gala held in the National Theatre in Warsaw, Piotr Szymanek, PGE Vice President for Corporate Affairs, received the Champion Statuette from Irena Szewińska, Poland's former Olympic champion.

I am greatly honoured to be able to receive this prestigious award on behalf of PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna, especially from the hands of Ms Irena Szewińska, who personifies everything that is best in sports: talents, hard work, and willpower, which resulted in the greatest achievements in the history of Polish sport, said Mr Szymanek.  I would like to thank the Award Committee for appreciating our company's role in providing support for the Polish champions. We sponsor Polish sports because - just like us - it gives us all good, positive energy. PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna SA is proud of numerous achievements of the sports people and teams supported by it.

During the gala in the National Theatre the title of the team of the year was given to the Polish national volleyball team. The success of the team coached by Andrea Anastasi was achieved also thanks to the great involvement and commitment of a few players of the PGE Skra Bełchatów Club. Bartosz Kurek, the best of them, won the second place in the popularity poll for the Best Athlete of 2011. However, we should not forget about Michał Winiarski, Karol Kłos, Paweł Zatorski, Michał Bąkiewcz, and Marcin Możdżonek, whose contribution to the team's success was equally important. Thanking for the award granted to the Polish national volleyball team, Marcin Możdżonek underlined the importance of assistance that the team receives from its titular sponsor.

I would like to thank PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna for its support for Polish volleyball and Polish sport, said the captain of the national team. PGE's support for the Bełchatów Sports Club has resulted in the success of the national team; from local support, it has developed into something much larger, said Konrad Piechocki, President of the PGE Skra Bełchatów Sports Club. Many years of stable support for our club have resulted in the development of a strong brand of champions, a wonderful and balanced volleyball league, and have contributed to the success of the national team. Without the assistance of such partners as PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna this would not have been possible, added Mr Piechocki while Jacek Nawrocki, a coach in PGE Skra Bełchatów Sports Club said, Support provided by PGE since 1991 has allowed us to move steadily and consistently towards the final success. PGE's support for the building of the club has given us 20 years of comfortable working conditions. Without PGE, we would surely not have managed to develop such a top class team and attract so many wonderful sports people.

Apart from volleyball players, PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna SA supports also the volleyball women's team of Atom Trefl Sopot, the basketball players of PGE Turów Zgorzelec, the footballers of PGE GKS Bełchatów, the handballers of SPR Lublin, and the speedway team of PGE Marma Rzeszów. Last year it was speedway that generated a lot of emotions in its fans - the speedway team won the gold medal during The FIM PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna Speedway World Cup 2011.

The competition for the speedway team world cup was one of the most important sports events of 2011 sponsored by PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna, said Dorota Idzi, Deputy Director in PGE's Corporate Communication Department. For two days Gorzów Wielkopolski became the world's speedway capital, and the event itself made the history of this sports discipline. In 2011 the Company was also involved, among other competitions, in the 35th Piast Cross-Country Skiing Race and the 13th Special Olympics World Summer Games. Another important event was the signing of a titular sponsoring agreement for PGE Arena Gdańsk.

It was the largest naming-rights project in Poland. PGE Arena Gdańsk is an impulse for the development of the city and Polish sport; it creates new opportunities for the local community. Consequently, for the PGE Capital Group, this project is important not only from the perspective of building the company's image and the recognisability of its brand in the region related to its long-term development plans, but also the proof of the company's social accountability. A visit to PGE Arena Gdańska and participation in a particular event result in strong emotions and special memories. The building of a sense of this community is a mission undertaken by PGE Polska Grupa Energetyczna SA, added Ms Idzi.

The Winners of the 77th Best Athlete Poll of TVP and sports daily Przegląd Sportowy During the gala of the Sports Champions the title of Poland's Best Athlete of 2011 and the Golden Champion Statuette went for the third time in a row to Justyna Kowalczyk, our cross country-skiing champion. Thus, she joined the elite group of the greatest winners in the history of the Poll - in the recent years her achievements have been matched only by Adam Małysz and Otylia Jędrzejczak.  It is yet another credit of trust for me, for which I want to thank everybody. My thanks go also to my coach, the whole team, and my family, said Ms Kowalczyk.

She was not able to receive the prize in person because on the very same day, in Val di Fiemme, Italy, she was taking part in the next stage of Tour de Ski, which she won again. The second place in the Popularity Poll was won by Bartosz Kurek, a volleyball player in PGE Skra Bełchatów. Adam Małysz was voted the third most popular athlete in 2011.
